Community Initiatives Intern

MWRD's Internship Program offers paid internship positions. While the main focus is on wastewater management, there are opportunities to gain knowledge and practical experience in a wide range of functions in each department.

Paid Interns

Paid interns are limited to 119 working days per calendar year and receive $18.00 per hour.

Required Documents:

• Letter of recommendation from a class instructor, professor, or Internship Coordinator from current school or university.
• Cover letter stating interest in position.
• Resume.

Eligibility Requirements

• Currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program in an accredited college or university and will be enrolled in the 2025/2026 school year.
• Permanent residency within the territorial boundaries of the MWRD (students may attend school outside the territorial boundaries).
• You must be a citizen or national of the United States, or an individual who is otherwise legally authorized to work in the United States.

Description:

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District is seeking an intern in the Board of Commissioner's Office.

We are seeking a motivated, civic-minded individual with a strong work ethic
to support the Commissioner in managing office operations and legislative
priorities.

This internship offers a dynamic mix of project coordination, public
outreach, communication, marketing, social media management, and administrative
responsibilities. Interns will also have the opportunity to lead a
research-based project. The Commissioner will serve as a collaborator,
providing guidance, resources, and support to ensure the project aligns with
MWRD's mission and office goals.

Duties & Responsibilities:

* Assist in coordinating and executing designated
projects.

* Conduct policy and legislative research,
providing updates as needed.

* Help plan and lead events.

* Represent the Commissioner at various meetings
and events, including in-person engagements within Cook County.

* Draft correspondence, reports, and other
official documents.

* Engage in community outreach, including
communication with public officials.

* Track progress and completion of assignments.

This role provides hands-on experience in policy, government operations, and
civic engagement, making it an excellent opportunity for those passionate about
public service.

Minimum Qualifications and Requirements:

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Experience with various social media platforms and graphic design websites such as Canva.
• Ability to comfortably interact with the public.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suites and Google applications.
• Passion for protecting the environment and activism knowledge in Chicago and Illinois.
• Provide a writing sample
