Job Summary

The UCSF Brain Tumor Center Preclinical Therapeutic Testing Core generates brain tumor-bearing animals and conducts preclinical anti-tumor agent trials for both UCSF investigators and external non-UCSF clients. The Core offers a variety of brain tumor models and complete set of services that include consultation regarding preclinical experimental design, establishing brain tumor models, administration of experimental agents, monitoring tumor growth and interpretation of experimental results.

The Senior Animal Technician will assist intracranial surgeries for establishing preclinical orthotopic models in rodents, assist monitor tumor growth using IVIS imaging machine and acquire and input imaging data. The individual will perform animal monitoring, administer agents via intraperitoneal injection, oral gavage, tail vein injection and subcutaneous injection, and mouse irradiation to experimental animals, and animal euthanasia.

Prior familiarity with laboratory mice is a required, and a willingness to learn new techniques and surgical procedures are expected.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $23.87 - $29.55 (Hourly Rate).

Required Qualifications


  • Graduation from high school, completion of training equivalent to the Laboratory Animal Technician certification of the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS), and two years of animal care experience; or high school graduation and three years of animal care experience in the care of animal species appropriate to the particular job; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position
  • Knowledge of rodent anatomy
  • Knowledge of use of Microsoft Excel and Word Software
  • Knowledge of percentage calculation
  • Strong organizational skill
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skill
