JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Department of Animal Science at Penn State University is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Poultry Research and Extension Technologist to support research and extension activities focused on laying hen management, production, and welfare. This part-time position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research and extension programs while working alongside a diverse and dedicated team in the lab of Dr. Bryan.

The technologist will assist in executing research trials, managing laboratory and farm operations, and supporting extension outreach efforts to stakeholders in the poultry industry.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in planning, setting up, and conducting research trials involving laying hens and other poultry species.
  • Maintain and care for animals in accordance with ethical and animal welfare standards.
  • Collect and analyze samples (e.g., eggs, feed) for research projects.
  • Maintain accurate and organized records of experimental data, observations, and reports.
  • Support laboratory, including purchasing lab supplies, equipment maintenance and operation.
  • Assist in preparing and delivering educational materials for extension outreach activities, such as workshops, field days, and industry meetings.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and ensure compliance with university and departmental policies.
  • Support graduate and undergraduate student projects.

Qualifications:

  • A degree in Animal Science, Poultry Science, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Experience with poultry handling, husbandry, and research methodologies is preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in data entry and basic statistical analysis; experience with statistical software is a plus but not required.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Willingness to perform physical tasks related to animal care and farm operations.
  • Commitment to maintaining high ethical standards in research and animal welfare.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in an academic research environment.
  • Familiarity with poultry production systems and the poultry industry.
  • Experience in developing and delivering extension or outreach materials.

Work Environment:
This position involves both laboratory and farm work. The successful candidate must be comfortable working with live animals and handling biological samples in various settings.
