Job Description Summary: |
The Research Scientist will collaborate closely with Dr. Raja Mazumder at The George Washington University in Washington, DC. This role involves contributing to developing cutting-edge databases, data analysis tools, and web resources, with a focus on bioinformatics research initiatives. The Research Scientist is expected to bring a high degree of expertise, leadership, and independence, acting as a key driver in the lab's research efforts. This position emphasizes designing and conducting advanced bioinformatics experiments, leading the development of computational tools, and interpreting complex biological data. Responsibilities include mentoring team members, publishing high-quality research, and fostering stakeholder collaboration. Strong problem-solving skills, the ability to guide projects with minimal supervision, and leveraging Dr. Mazumder's insights are crucial to success in this role.
Job Duties Include
- Lead Research Initiatives: Manage bioinformatics projects, integrate data, and develop advanced web tools and resources.
- Collaborate and Communicate: Create detailed project documentation, organize meetings, and maintain effective communication with stakeholders, team members, and collaborators.
- Tool and Workflow Development: Design, test, and refine bioinformatics software, tools, and workflows to meet research needs.
- Report and Analyze Results: Write detailed and informative reports, presentations, and analyses for internal and external stakeholders.
- Mentorship and Team Support: Provide guidance, foster collaboration, and introduce innovative tools and methods to improve research outcomes.
- Project Management: Set timelines, assign tasks, and ensure project milestones are met using platforms such as SharePoint, GitHub, and Slack. Write project reports and perform other project management tasks.
- Grant and Publication Support: Contribute to research proposals, papers, publications, and presentations.
- Additional tasks may be assigned to support the lab's overarching goals.
Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position. |
Minimum Qualifications: |
Qualified candidates will hold a Master's degree plus 5 years of experience or a PhD plus 2 years of experience in a related discipline to include at least 2 years of research and/or college level teaching in a field basic to the work to be performed. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. |

Preferred Qualifications: |
- Proficiency in programming languages (e.g., Python, R, C++) and familiarity with web frameworks and cloud platforms (e.g., AWS).
- Experience in statistical analysis and data visualization for biological research.
- Experience in biocuration, machine learning, and knowledge graphs.
- Demonstrated experience conducting bioinformatics experiments, analyzing data, and producing impactful results in a bioinformatics or computational biology setting.
- Proven ability to manage and analyze large-scale datasets with reproducible and scalable methodologies.
- Expertise in utilizing and analyzing biological databases, biomarkers, glycans, genes, and proteins.
- Excellent scientific writing and communication skills, with a strong track record of peer-reviewed publications.
- Demonstrated leadership and team management skills, with the ability to foster collaboration and mentorship.
