The full-time Craftsworker position within the Parks and Forestry division is responsible for day-to-day operations within the division such as preparing routine records and reports, operating grounds' maintenance equipment and assisting in various seasonal responsibilities.

Schedule: Monday - Friday; 7:00am - 3:30pm (40 hours/week)

More about the Division The Parks and Forestry Division provides for the care and maintenance of public shade trees, including tree pruning, removal of public trees that are deemed to be hazardous or diseased, and roadside brush control. The division conducts the annual tree planting, maintains parks and athletic fields, provides support for athletic and recreational programs, and maintains the grounds at Ridge Hill Reservation.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responds to service calls to evaluate services required; determines Town responsibility for tree removal, and trimming, etc. and need for Police safety details.
  • Assists in seasonal responsibilities including mowing, leaf and rubbish collection, pool and ice-skating rink maintenance, and general park maintenance.
  • Operates bucket truck and aerial equipment, chain saw, chipper, stump cutter, and related equipment.
  • Performs related equipment maintenance; sets up riggings for safety in performance of job duties; and climbs trees.
  • Responds to inquiries, requests, and complaints from residents, contractors, and Town employees; and endeavors to continuously improve services to taxpayers.
  • Mandatory participation in the Snow & Ice Program, including operating snow plowing, removal, sanding, and salting equipment; providing emergency assistance, as needed.

Requirements

  • Valid CDL Class A or B.
  • One (1) to three (3) years of relevant experience
  • General knowledge equivalent to a high school diploma and additional, specialized courses.
  • Ability to perform work outside, subject to all weather conditions.

Preferred but not Required Qualifications

  • Hoisting Engineer's License 2B or higher
  • MA Pesticide Applicator's License

Pre-Hire Process:

For positions requiring a Commercial Driver's License (CDL), the Town of Needham conducts pre-employment drug testing and post-employment random drug and alcohol testing in accordance with U.S. DOT Regulations.
