Job Summary

Under general supervision and according to established policies and procedures, performs receptionist, clerical and specimen processing support duties in one or more sections of the Laboratory. Help answering phones, prepare specimens for analysis, input specimen information into laboratory computer, print worksheets, introduce specimens to instrumentation, verify specimen identification with instrument entry of tests, introduce calibration material to instruments and help troubleshoot instrumentation, store samples after analysis, help prepare reagents and other duties as assigned. Works closely with and under the guidance of Clinical Laboratory Scientists (CLS), specialists and supervisor. Notifies appropriate personnel of unexpected events and problems. Helps to perform quality control of test methods and instrumentation, order, receive and organize inventory supplies/reagent as needed, and maintaining necessary level of supplies and/or reagents. Provides laboratory maintenance support through cleaning of equipment, operation of autoclave, washing glassware and helps the CLS to repeat laboratory testing when needed. Assists in preparation of training documents and helps to train other staff in the new methods or instruments. This position must perform all duties in a manner that promotes the team concept and reflects the UCSF mission, vision and values.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $62.63 - $62.63 (Hourly Rate).

Required Qualifications


  • Graduation from college with coursework in biological sciences, or two years of college with some coursework in natural, physical, or social sciences or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • One or two years of experience working in testing laboratory performing or helping to perform test procedures.
  • Familiarity with laboratory science and ability to work with instruments, preferably laboratory instrumentation experience with troubleshooting.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with physicians, requesting departments, and other staff including ability to clearly explain complex medical information in both verbal and written form.
  • Analytical skills necessary in order to understand test results.
  • Proficient with PC, Windows, Word, Excel, etc.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Previous knowledge of and experience in a clinical lab setting, and medical terminology preferred.
  • Phlebotomy license preferred.
