Position Description:

The University of Iowa program in American Sign Language (ASL) invites applications for an instructional track position for the 2025-2026 academic year, renewable for an additional two years (2026-2027 and 2027-2028) and then renewable in three-year increments pending positive teaching reviews and college authorization. Responsibilities include teachingsix courses a year (20-24 s.h.). This could be six sections of ASL per year(maximum 20 students per section) using an immersion curriculum, or a combination of language and specialty courses taught in ASL (such as Interpreting or Deaf Studies courses). The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to program development, including curriculum and materials development, organizing conversation hours and other co-curricular activities; to maintain an active professional presence in the field; and develop and maintain an appropriate service portfolio. Summer employment possible if desired, dependent upon program needs and resources. Starting Date: August 20, 2025.

Screening begins March 3, 2025, and will continue until the position is filled. Preliminary interviews may be conducted by videoconference.

The successful candidate will be required to disclose any misconduct history or pending research misconduct investigation, including but not limited to sexual misconduct in prior employment, along with a related release. Education Requirement:


  • Bachelor's Degree in Interpreting, Deaf Studies, ASL or related field in hand by start date


Required Qualifications:


  • Fluency in ASL
  • Teaching experience and/or equivalent experience (teaching assistantship, teaching practicum, teaching workshops/conference presentations, mentoring interpreters, etc.)


Desirable Qualifications:


  • Master's Degree in Interpreting, Deaf Studies, ASL Education, or related field in hand by start date;
  • Two years' teaching experience at the college level or two years of successful, varied ASL interpreting;
  • ASLPI minimum score of 3.5 and/or American Sign Language Teacher Association (ASLTA) certification and/or National Interpreting Certification (NIC) and/or Interpreting test score equivalent;
  • Demonstrated ability to offer upper-level ASL language courses and advanced courses such as Introduction to ASL/English Interpreting, ASL Linguistics, ASL Literature, Deaf History, or Deaf Studies.
