Job Summary

Under the administrative supervision of the Pediatric Department Chair and clinical supervision of a Neonatology Attending, the APN Nurse Practitioner will practice in an inpatient pediatric setting providing clinical care and management of sick neonates in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The APN will also provide delivery room coverage as needed. Performs all duties with the legal guidelines of the Nurse Practice Act and Cook County Health (CCH) policies. MULTIPLE VACANCIES

Typical Duties



  • Provides independent care for a population of patients as delineated in the collaborative agreement.
  • Participates in the care of all neonates in the NICU.
  • Performs infant resuscitation of deliveries in Labor and Delivery, Operating Room (OR), Emergency Department (ED), or other areas.
  • Participates as member of the transport team, as needed.
  • Provides independent pediatric physical assessment; obtains a comprehensive health history and physical; documents progress notes; prepares discharge summaries as required.
  • Identifies significant health and medical risk factors and documents in the EMR
  • Orders and interprets diagnostic tests to differentiate between normal variations and abnormal deviations; refers patients with abnormal results to consult with a physician
  • In collaboration with the physician, develops a treatment plan
  • Prescribes and dispenses of legal drugs and controlled substances as delegated
  • Acts as a liaison and collaborates with nursing staff, physicians, and house staff regularly to ensure quality and safe patient care.
  • Performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures as delegated and within the scope of practice of the collaborating physician; central vascular access, lumbar punctures, endotracheal intubation chest tube replacement, peripheral vascular access, and management of Non-Invasive Position Pressure Ventilation (NIPPV) and Intermittent Position Pressure Ventilation (IPPV).


Minimum Qualifications



  • Must possess a current Advanced Practice Nurse - Nurse Practitioner license in the State of Illinois as a Nurse Practitioner or ability to obtain license prior to starting employment
  • Current DEA License or the ability to obtain license within six (6) months of hire
  • Current IL controlled Substance License or the ability to obtain within (6) months of hire
  • One (1) year experience working in an Intensive Care Setting
  • Master's degree in Neonatal Nurse Practitioner specialty from an accredited college or university (Must provide official transcripts at time of interview)
  • Must be certified by a nationally recognized body as designated by the rules and regulations of the Nurse Practice Act


Preferred Qualifications



  • Must possess a Basic Life Support (BLS) certification and/or NRP certification

MUST MEET REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AT TIME OF APPLICATION

Must successfully meet the credentialing standards established by the Cook County Health to include a State of Illinois APN license and any other license, certification or specialized training, etc. no later than two (2) weeks prior to the candidate's start date.

*Degrees awarded outside the United States with the exception of those awarded in one of the United States' territories and Canada must be credentialed by an approved U.S. credential evaluation service belonging to the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) or the Association of International Credential Evaluators (AICE). Original credentialing documents must be presented at time of interview.
