Position Summary:

The Supervisor of Clinical Pathology Laboratory oversees and coordinates the activities of subordinate staff performing specimen receiving, accessioning and processing. In this capacity, the Supervisor of Clinical Pathology Laboratory coordinates day to day changes in staffing and maintains the specimen receiving and processing procedure manual. S/he also assists in staffing the specimen processing section, the training of laboratory personnel and laboratory and medical students.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Receive a wide variety of specimens arriving at the laboratory
  • Use the laboratory information system for all records functions and inquiries related to testing of patient specimens and Quality Assurance data collection.
  • Complete Problem Analysis Reports to thoroughly document any matters requiring follow-up or corrective action.
  • Interact with physicians, patients, staff, visitors and all customers via telephone and in person, in a pleasant and helpful manner.
  • Work cooperatively with the administrative staff to prepare for inspections and surveys related to accreditation requirements. Ensure readiness of Specimen Processing for said inspections.
  • Ensure quality customer service:
  • Coordinate customer service training.
  • Conduct periodic in-service reviews to maintain consistent application of customer service skills.
  • Perform General Supervisory functions:
  • Prepare and conduct Performance Management (PMS) reviews.
  • Institute employee discipline and counseling.
  • Assist in employee recruitment and interview process.
  • Assist in payroll and clockwork preparation.
  • Assist in devising staff schedules.
  • Review and update the Specimen Processing procedure manuals.
  • Conduct periodic staff meetings.
  • Participate in the Laboratory Continuing Education (CE) program.
  • Ensure continuous workflow of the laboratory by working closely with other supervisors by communicating verbally.
  • Ensure staff meet TAT's and Quality Assurance standards.
  • Perform Specific Supervisory functions
  • Coordinate training of personnel.
  • Complete training checklists.
  • Complete competency evaluation.
  • Perform quality assurance data collection.
  • Prepare quality control reports for review by the Administrative Manager and the Departmental Quality Assurance (QAI) committee.
  • Perform advanced maintenance and troubleshooting on the centrifuge as needed
  • Prepare, review and update specimen processing laboratory procedure manual.
  • Attend morning managers' meetings in the absence of the manager.
  • Inventory supplies on a routine basis and order supplies as necessary to assure no interruption in processing patient specimens.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications Required:

1. Any one or any combination of the following, totaling six (6) years (72 months), from the categories below:

A. college training with a major in biological sciences or closely related field
  • 30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months)
  • Associate's Degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen months (18 months)
  • 90 semester hours equals two (2) years (24 months)
  • Bachelor's Degree (120 semester hours) equals three (3) years (36 months)

B. progressively responsible work experience in a clinical pathology facility which must include: hematology, urinalysis, fecal analysis, clinical chemistry, exfoliative cytology, anatomic pathology and any other ancillary procedure.
