Job Summary The Medical Director of Neurology Ambulatory Services (Medical Director) is responsible for providing administrative leadership for quality improvement activities, patient safety initiatives, budget, grants, and research throughout Cook County Health (CCH) outpatient clinics and Electromyography (EMG) laboratories (labs), under the direction of the Chair of the Division of Neurology. The Medical Director will provide direct patient care as an attending physician in the Division of Neurology in Cook County Health (CCH) hospitals and clinics. Participates in CCH approved projects and/or committees. General Administrative Responsibilities Collective Bargaining
- Review applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements and consult with Labor Relations to generate management proposals
- Participate in collective bargaining negotiations, caucus discussions and working meetings
Discipline
- Document, recommend and effectuate discipline at all levels
- Work closely with labor relations and/or labor counsel to effectuate and enforce applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements
- Initiate, authorize and complete disciplinary action pursuant to CCH system rules, policies, procedures and provision of applicable collective bargaining agreements
Supervision
- Direct and effectuate CCH management policies and practices
- Access and proficiently navigate CCH records system to obtain and review information necessary to execute provisions of applicable collective bargaining agreements
Management
- Contribute to the management of CCH staff and CCH' systemic development and success
- Discuss and develop CCH system policies and procedures
- Consistently use independent judgment to identify operational staffing issues and needs and perform the following functions as necessary; hire, transfer, suspend, layoff, recall, promote, discharge, assign, direct or discipline employees pursuant to applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements
- Work with Labor Relations to discern past practice when necessary
Typical Duties
- Supervises and leads outpatient Neurology services, including CCH Neurology clinics, Neurology procedures, EMG labs and interpretation of tests.
- Assures that outpatient Neurology EMG labs comply with federal and state regulations and Joint Commission requirements
- Participates in developing, guiding, managing, implementing, monitoring, and enforcing clinical, administrative, educational, quality improvement and research activities pertaining to Neurology
- Leads in the development, evaluation, and introduction of new outpatient Neurology services, equipment, and procedures.
- Collaborates on interdisciplinary projects in response to the complexity of patient care demands.
- Conducts, participates, and monitors performance improvement activities.
- Serves as full-time attending physician in Neurology non-teaching and teaching services at CCH hospitals.
- Provides clinical care for Neurology patients in the inpatient and outpatient settings for the CCH hospitals and clinics.
- Maintains an active clinical load of at least 70%.
- Performs only the procedures and treats only the conditions approved at the time of appointment or reappointment.
- Sets standards and ensures the provision of consistent high quality Neurology care by educating, assisting, and guiding primary care physicians in the appropriate management of patients.
- Participates in programs and protocols to ensure appropriate management and continuity of care for patients with neurological illness.
- Participates in the division performance improvement program and departmental and hospital performance improvement activities.
- Serves as member on system committees as assigned.
- Performs other duties as assigned by Division Chair or delegate.
Minimum Qualifications
- Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy Medicine (DO) from an accredited college or university
- Must be Licensed as a Physician and Surgeon in the State of Illinois prior to starting employment
- Must be cleared for privileges by Medical Staff Services by start of employment
- Board Certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology
- Certified by the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine
- Five (5) years of work experience as an Attending Physician in the practice of Neurology with at least one (1) year of this experience training residents and/or fellows
- Two (2) years of work experience in administering clinical, educational, quality assurance or research programs related to Neurology
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics
- Thorough knowledge and understanding of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) to ensure the protection of the confidentiality and security of healthcare information for all patients
- Knowledge of the principles and methods of training medical staff to ensure standards of care meet or exceed expectations
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and electronic medical record
- Basic knowledge of QA guidelines and/or requirements
- Must be proficient in the latest computer technology as well as have the required skill set for electronic medical records
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills necessary to communicate with all levels of staff and a patient population composed of diverse cultures and age groups
- Demonstrated analytical and organizational, problem-solving, critical thinking, and conflict management/resolution skills
- Demonstrated attention to detail, accuracy, and precision
- Demonstrated ability to make appropriate and timely decisions
