General Responsibilities:
Hitachi Astemo Americas Inc is looking for an experienced suspension engineer to join our Advanced Chassis Team. The candidate for this position will be responsible for designing, planning, testing, and coordinating multiple processes for new products related to shock-absorber business, including passive and semi-active technologies. In addition, in this position, the candidate will coordinate all product development activities between customers, suppliers and responsible departments within the Hitachi Astemo.
Job Responsibilities:
The primary responsibility of this position includes:
- Lead development of new damper technologies & components from concept to prototype build and production release through automotive project lifecycle.
- Create statement of requirements and manage development timing to meet project milestones.
- Create, document and sign off engineering release documents (such as 2D drawings and 3D models, DFMEA and DVP&R) for new components and technologies.
- Perform design calculations, GD&T and tolerance stack up analysis.
- Conduct design reviews with cross-functional stake holders within Astemo and OEM design teams.
- Lead prototyping and testing, analyze test data, and make necessary adjustments to designs.
- Collaborate with teammates to develop initial technical design concepts on new automotive suspension components
- Collaborate with cross-functional team to understand and incorporate manufacturing feasibility constraints into designs to meet internal & customer design, cost and weight targets.
- Work along with simulation engineers to provide methodology for virtual product validation and verification.
- Conduct research and development activities to identify new materials and manufacturing processes that can be utilized to improve project outcomes.
Other:
- Occasional meetings outside of core business hours with other global Astemo and OEM sites.
- Manage and lead assigned deliverables with minimal supervision.
- Foster teamwork through good interpersonal skills
- Exhibit strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
- Able to share analysis, findings, inferences etc. through excellent communication skills- verbal & non-verbal.
- Ability to interface with other Chassis business units (e.g. brakes, steering, software) for technology integration is desired.

- Prior program management or project planning experience is desired.
Qualifications:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Proficiency in 3D CAD modeling (CATIA and 3D Experience preferred, but not required), 2D drawings, tolerance analysis, design for manufacturability, and assembly.
- Strong analytical skills and engineering fundamentals in solid mechanics, material science, fluid mechanics, mechanical design, and manufacturing
- Knowledge of CFD, Vehicle Dynamics and Mechanical Structural analysis from a functional standpoint.
- Experience in the following:
- CAE/FEA software - ANSYS/ SW FEA
- Statistical software - Minitab
- Have experience tracking and reporting design changes.
- Experience with product development inside OEM or a Tier-I is preferred.
- Experience with Materials for Specific Applications: Experience working with certain types of materials for specific applications, such as aerospace, automotive or biomedical, can add value to specific industry needs.
What will give you a competitive edge (Preferred Skills)
- Experience with shocks, struts, automotive suspension components
- Experience with ASME Y14.5-2009 & ISO dimensioning & tolerancing standards.
- Six Sigma Green Belt Certification.
- Proficiency with tolerance stack up analysis tools such as 3DCS.
Additionally, the ability to work independently with minimal direction is required as are strong/effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to travel and support activities and coordination at the global level is desired. Education: Bachelor of mechanical engineering or equivalent. Master's degree is preferable Experience: 5+ years' applicable experience in the automotive industry, preferable in suspension or shock-absorber related areas.
