Welch School of Art & Design, the School of Film, Media & Theatre, and the Center for Educational Partnerships in Music. In addition to offering some of the university's most popular majors, the college connects faculty and students with Atlanta's thriving arts scene and booming film and music industries.
Position Description
The School of Music at Georgia State University in Atlanta seeks to hire a non-tenure track Lecturer in Applied Flute to begin in the 2025-26 academic year. This position is a full-time, benefits-eligible, continuing appointment, subject to a third-year review in accordance with promotion policies and is eligible for full health and retirement benefits (see GSU Benefits).
As a Lecturer in Applied Flute at Georgia State University, the successful candidate will play a vital role as the School of Music collaborates to transform its curriculum and pedagogy to foreground experiential, interdisciplinary, and technologically enhanced learning furthering Georgia State's strategic goal of demonstrating that students can achieve academic and career success at high rates. Opportunities for growth and support in this position include university-level teaching fellowships and grants through the Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Online Education, leadership in instructional innovation through our active learning classroom program, and successive promotion to the ranks of Senior Lecturer and Principal Lecturer.
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching excellence; create an innovative curriculum in line with Georgia State University's commitment to undergraduate and graduate teaching; and will teach the equivalent of four three-credit-hour courses per academic semester (approximately 20 applied lessons per week).
The selected candidate can expect to:

  • Teach weekly applied flute lessons for approximately 20 undergraduate and graduate music majors;
  • Conduct/teach a weekly flute studio class;
  • Coach weekly chamber music classes;
  • Work with students on junior, senior, and graduate-level recitals;
  • Mentor undergraduate and graduate-level string students;
  • Teach supplementary courses and other related courses as needed and as the schedule allows (i.e., music theory, aural skills, music appreciation, etc.).
  • Work closely with woodwind, instrumental, and all School of Music colleagues;
  • Attend faculty meetings (including those of the woodwind area, department, college, and university);
  • Actively participate in faculty governance at the school, college, and university-level, including service on committees and other faculty administrative assignments as needed


The candidate will be expected to attract, recruit, and retain talented students, especially in performance and instrumental music education, while maintaining a visible profile as an educator. Active recruitment of flute students from the state of Georgia and beyond via outreach and recruitment events, including interaction with pre-collegiate students and high school music programs, is essential.
Recruitment activities may involve the following:

  • Providing sample lessons for prospective students;
  • Recruitment trips to reach high schools with strong band programs;
  • Coaching high school ensembles on and off-campus;
  • Teaching and/or performing at esteemed summer music camps;
  • Active membership and participation in National Flute Association, the Georgia Music Educators Association, and other similar organizations;
  • Etc.

Required Experience

  • At least one (1) year teaching applied flute at the collegiate level


Required Education
  • Master's degree in music or equivalent (i.e., licensure from an international accredited institution, high-level of performance experience, etc.) at the time of appointment
Preferred Qualifications/Experience

  • Doctorate in Music
  • Experience and success in teaching music classes at the collegiate level
  • Experience and success in teaching applied flute at the collegiate level
  • An established national reputation as a performer
  • A commitment to music instruction
