Job Summary UNION - SEIU 73

Under close supervision, performs routine stat tests in serology, hematology, chemistry, microbiology or other assigned area(s) as part of a coordinated effort by laboratory personnel to test for and identify various clinical specimens: Assists MLT Ill's, Medical Technologist and other staff by labeling vials and specimens, conducting laboratory tests, correlating results, operating laboratory equipment, and performing other procedures according to well established guidelines. Applies appropriate techniques in analyzing clinical specimens. Interacts with others in a variety of shared tasks, referring problems or questions which may arise to the Medical Technologist or other designated personnel. Reports finding verbally or in writing; performs record keeping, data management, inventory control and related tasks involving the use of laboratory information systems. Perforn1s simple calibrations and maintenance of equipment. May participate and assist in blood drawing services.

Typical Duties




  • Under close to moderate supervision, performs high volume, routine stat tests in serology, hematology, chemistry, microbiology or other assigned area(s) as part of a coordinated effort by laboratory personnel to test for and identify clinical specimens



  • Assists Medical Technologist and other personnel through a variety of tasks which include but are not limited to labeling vials and specimens, conducting laboratory tests, correlating results, operating laboratory equipment, and performing other procedures according to well established guidelines



  • Closely follows written and verbal instruction to ensure compliance with prescribed methods. Deviates from established procedure only under direction or according to prior instruction. Interacts with others in a variety of shared tasks as directed



  • Applies simple techniques involving staining of microorganisms, transferring cultures, preparing chemicals, collecting blood or other samples, analyzing body fluids; reports findings verbally or in writing; performs record keeping, data management, inventory control and related tasks through the use of laboratory information systems



  • Performs routine calibrations and maintenance of equipment



  • Participates and assists in blood drawing procedures and related activities as required



  • Enters and maintains records through the use of the laboratory information systems or other PCs and maintains the confidentiality of patient-related materials in compliance with HIPPA requirements



  • Assists with the maintenance and storage of supplies and performs other duties as required

Minimum Qualifications



  • Must quality as a Medical Laboratory Technician under the Illinois Laboratories Code, required.
  • Must have prior work experience in a hospital or healthcare setting as a Laboratory Technician, required.


Preferred Qualifications



  • American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or other certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician, preferred.


Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics



  • Basic skills and knowledge of the technical and other related principles and practices necessary to function effectively as a Medical Laboratory Technician within a designated clinical laboratory units or section of the County's Healthcare System
  • Ability to apply previously acquired skills and knowledge to area of assignment and successfully participate in additional on the job training as may be provided
  • Ability to perform routine stat tests in serology, hematology, chemistry, microbiology or other assigned area(s) as part of a coordinated effort by laboratory personnel to test for and identify clinical specimens
  • Ability to assist MLT III and others by labeling vials and specimens, conducting laboratory_ tests, correlating results, operating laboratory equipment, and performing other procedures according to well established guidelines
  • Ability to work well and interact with others in shared tasks, referring problems or questions which may arise to the Medical Technologist or other designated personnel
  • Ability to follow instructions and written guidelines effectively
  • Ability to master simple techniques involving staining of microorganisms, transferring cultures, preparing chemicals,
  • Ability to report findings both verbally and in writing; ability to accurately maintain records and data through the use of laboratory information systems
  • Ability to assist with storekeeping, supplies and inventory control as directed
  • Ability to participate and assist in blood drawing services as required
  • Ability to maintain the confidentiality of patient related materials in compliance with HIPPA requirements
  • This position may require various types of physical exertion including, but not limited to, climbing, lifting, pulling, pushing, prolonged standing, operating laboratory equipment and other devices, or moving moderate io heavy weights
