Summary of Job Duties:The Department of Mathematics in the College of Arts and Science at the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith invites applications for an Instructor/Assistant Professor in Mathematics Education to begin in August 2025. The incumbent must teach various undergraduate mathematics and statistics courses, including general education, service, and mathematics/statistics major/minor courses, as well as courses in mathematics education, including elementary education. The position reports to the Department Chair. Qualifications:

Minimum Required Education & Work Experience: Minimum requirements include an earned master's degree in mathematics, statistics, or mathematics education which includes at least 18 graduate credit hours of mathematics courses. At least three years of K-12-level teaching experience and a valid secondary education teacher license.

Preferred Education and Work Experience: A doctorate in mathematics, statistics, or mathematics education is preferred and required for appointment at the Assistant Professor rank. An ABD in mathematics education will be considered contingent on degree completion within one year of appointment. Demonstrated professional profile as an educator in mathematics and mathematics education is a plus.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Percentages are approximate and based on title at hire.

  • 70% Classroom instruction, teaching a minimum of 24 credit hours per academic year
    • Teach mathematics education courses, including but not limited to elementary and secondary mathematics.
    • Teach other classes contingent upon the candidate's expertise, interest, and needs of the department
  • 20% Scholarly activity, including directing undergraduate research as assigned (with Assistant Professor rank)
  • 10% Service to the department, college, university, and profession, including student recruitment, retention, and advising as well as committees and assessment duties

Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: The following are required competencies for the essential functions of this position:

  • Ability to effectively teach a wide range of entry-level general education mathematics courses, many to non-majors and first-generation students
  • Ability to teach courses in mathematics content/pedagogy designed for future K-12 teachers
  • Commitment to excellence in teaching, including the utilization of classroom technology and well-developed communication skills
  • Demonstration of deep pedagogical knowledge of mathematics and connections among mathematical ideas
  • Commitment to growth in all aspects of a faculty member, including teaching, scholarship, and service

Additional Information:

Working Relationships: Works daily with faculty, students, and staff campus-wide. Some contact with students and instructors from high schools, junior high schools, and elementary schools for specially scheduled events and mathematics education curricula activities.

Salary Information:

Minimum salary of $52,000 per year. Final salary commensurate with education and experience.
